Frank Shaw Associates were approached by the college to develop a ‘whole site strategy’, which included the construction of a new science facility to house their physics and chemistry departments.

As part of the site analysis, key areas were identified for refurbishment and reconfiguring, including staff and student welfare facilities and external landscaping. FSA also advised on interventions necessary to aid access in light of DDA legislation, and generally to ‘unlock’ the site for all.

FSA proposed a flexible and sustainable building for the science department, which utilised passive energy-saving technologies whilst allowing for future adaptability and services. The building orientation maximised internal daylight and reconciled circulation around the site.

The building configuration facilitates a rich educational environment by bringing people together via a centrally organized space that links directly with each department and can act as a catalyst for communication. All works were completed whilst the college was fully operational.
